Gaye Pereira-Jackson has worked for 21 years in various parts of Asia, and has learnt some of the traditional arts and crafts of these areas. Batik represents culture, tradition, local customs, local natural dyes, fabric making, mythology, and design and is held in high esteem through generations and handed down in royal lineage!
Gaye will take you through its historical beginnings & introduce you to the age-old techniques and principles of traditional Batik Making on cotton fabric using dyes and hot beeswax. The traditional way is a long and tedious process and is better left to the experts!
Instead, in this full day workshop, we will make our own batik painting BUT with a twist - Watercolour Batik!
What is Watercolour Batik? It is an amazing technique where you combine melted wax and watercolours to create distinctive paintings.
Over the weekend Gaye will introduce the basic principles of using watercolours instead of fabric dyes and wax resist techniques that are quicker, more manageable and easier to produce the same results! You will complete at least 2 batik paintings by replacing the cloth with rice paper and watercolour paper!
Come and learn a new technique using everyday watercolour supplies you have in your studio!!
Cost: $70 per day (HBAS members) $80 non-HBAS members.
